The Centre is responsible for teaching the languages and literatures of the six Southeast Asian nations. In response to emerging needs, the Center is currently making arrangements to also teach Burmese and Tetum. During the course of studies, the emphasis is placed on teaching these modern national languages in order to provide students with the ability to read a wide range of current material and to communicate orally and in writing in a manner acceptable to native speakers.
As well, the Centre has a strong interest in teaching and research in regional languages and in the classical languages and literatures of the region and in the performing arts. Thus, the Centre regards it of particular importance to make available subjects such as Modern Javanese, Lao, Traditional Malay and Thai Literature. These courses are designed for advanced students.
All the Southeast Asia Centre programs are open to undergraduate students taking degrees in the Faculty of Asian Studies as well as to students enrolled in other Faculties at the Australian National University. The Centre's programs include elementary and advanced Indonesian and Malaysian, Thai and Lao, and Vietnamese.
Students are welcome to discuss their decisions on courses and degrees with the Centre's teachers.
