John Funston [BA (Hons)(Monash); MA(Monash); PhD (ANU)] is a Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Asian Studies, and Associate Director of the National Thai Studies Centre, ANU. He has worked in Southeast Asia for some fourteen years, teaching Southeast Asian history and politics at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (1972-1976) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (1986-1989), and researching regional politics as a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore (1997-2001). He has also taught at Adelaide University (1971-1972) and worked on Southeast Asian issues in the Australian public service. His major publications include: an edited volume on Government and Politics in Southeast Asia (ISEAS, Singapore and Zedbooks, London, 2001) (contributed chapters on Malaysia and Thailand); Malay Politics in Malaysia: A Study of UMNO and PAS (Heinemann, Kuala Lumpur, 1980); and numerous articles on politics in Malaysia, Thailand and ASEAN.
