Year in Asia
Undergraduate Program

Would you like to travel overseas and study in an Asian country and have it counted towards your degree?

The Faculty of Asian Studies offers specialist four-year degree courses which involve one year of study either in an Asian country (eg China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand or Vietnam) or in an Arab country (eg Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon) for the third year of study. These degrees extend language competence and build on disciplinary studies. The first two years are the same as the Bachelor of Asian Studies, the third year is spent in Asia an Arab country, and the fourth year back at the ANU.

These specialist degrees can also be combined with Bachelor degrees in Arts, Commerce, Economics, law, Science and Visual Arts. For combined degree courses students spend either their fourth or fifth year in Asia or an Arab country.

For mastery of a language and ability to negotiate a culture with confidence a significant period of in-country experience is necessary. The specialist degree courses offered by the Faculty opens the door to such experience by including a year in Asia or the Arab world devoted to language and disciplinary study. During this Year-in-Asia or Year-in-the-Arab-World programs, students take the equivalent of 48 credit points in language and disciplinary studies and prepare an individual study project.

The specialist degree program is intended for talented and dedicated students. A limited number of scholarships may be available to help students with fares and living costs during their year in Asia or the Arab world.

Minimum admission requirements will be set at a higher level than for the Bachelor of Asian Studies degree, and students will be expected to complete the first two years of the program at credit level or above to be eligible for the Year-in-Asia or Year-in-the-Arab-World.

Students who do not attain the required standard will transfer to the three-year degree after second year. Conversely, students in the three-year degree who meet the required standard will be allowed to transfer to the four-year degree and participate in the Year-in Asia or Year-in-the-Arab-World.program.

Financial support

All students taking the Year-in Asia or Year-in-the-Arab-World as part of their specialist degree program are eligible for financial support. This may be in the form of an ANU Study Abroad scholarship, designed to help students meet travel and living expenses. Currently the value of the ANU Study Abroad scholarship is $1000. Alternatively, depending on circumstances, students may receive support from the Australian government's University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific program or a range of sponsorships from Asian governments and foundations.
