What is a shared directory?
A shared directory is shared file space on a host server, called in Microsoft-speak a 'network drive'. In the simplest case, a single user has a single share, accessible only by himself. Directories can be shared by more than one user, however.
How do I access a shared directory?
- on a PC
- map a network drive:
- right click 'My Network Places' --> Map Network Drive
- then Browse to DISAN\asiaserv04\<name of the share>
- on a Mac
- connect via Chooser --> AsianStudies zone --> ASIASERV04 --> <name of the share>
What's my username and password?
Your DISAN username and password. Ask Greg if you can't remember.
Can anyone see what I've put there?
Not everyone; only people with access to the share.
Can I have a private share for some-purpose-or-other?
No. Shares are set up for Centres and other Faculty groups. Below that, you should create directories (folders) for sub-shares.
What about quota?
Quota (space on the server) is assigned to users, not to shares. Putting a file in a shared directory will consume that much of your quota, currently 1.5 Gbyte per user.
