Programmes
Japan centre, Faculty of Asian Studies, Australian National University offers the following postgraduate programmes in the area of Japanese linguistics/applied linguistics (East Asia Studies):
• Graduate Certificate in Applied Japanese Linguistics
• Graduate Diploma
• MA
• MPhil
• PhD
Graduate Diploma is a one-year coursework-based programme and is suitable for students with no previous formal training in Japanese linguistics/applied linguistics. Courses are offered in conjunction with the linguistic/applied linguistic programmes in School of Language Studies, and are available in a wide range of Japanese and general linguistic/applied linguistic areas. Upon the completion of Graduate Diploma with a satisfactory result, students may transfer to the second year (thesis writing) in MA.
MA is a two-year programme which consists of one year of coursework followed by one year of research (thesis writing). This programme is suitable for students who have some previous training in Japanese (or general) linguistics/applied linguistics.
MPhil is a research-based two-year programme and is suitable for students who have completed some formal training (e.g. BA in Japanese linguistics) with a good academic track record in Japanese (or general) linguistics/applied linguistics.
PhD is a research-based programme for three to four years. Applicants are expected to have previously completed MPhil, MA or Honours with a good academic track record in the area of Japanese (or general) linguistics/applied linguistics. Individual student is provided up to AUD $7,000 of fieldwork funding during the study.
Supervision/study areas
ANU has rich resources in the area of linguistics/applied linguistics with a number of researchers who are working in these areas in Faculty of Asian Studies, School of Language Studies, and Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies. The Centre research supervision is provided in cooperation with these institutes (e.g. In general three or four researchers across the institutes form a supervisory panel for an individual PhD student), and its supervision capacity covers a wide range of topics in the area of Japanese linguistics/applied linguistics.
Teaching opportunities
Japan Centre offers a number of Japanese language and Japanese linguistics courses at the undergraduate level. The research students at the centre are normally given an opportunity of part-time teaching in these courses.
