Pebble is an ANU file server which gives storage space to ANU account holders. You can use it to store your files. It is particularly useful as a half-way house to hold your files if you want to view your local, Faculty, material somewhere else at the ANU.

Can I use Pebble to view my audio-visual files in the Baldessin Precinct Building Level 1 studios and else where at the ANU?

Yes. See the instructions below.

How do I get access down there to my material here?

Log on to the machine downstairs or any other networked PC at the ANU with your u number and ANU password. This will open your share on Pebble. Files that you have previously uploaded to it will then be available to you and you can show them on the AV equipment.

How do I upload to Pebble?

  • If you use a Mac, connect to the server via your Mac's Finder 'connect to a server' menu.
    • Go (to server)
    • in the address box, type: smb://pebble/unnnnnnn where unnnnn is your ANU 'u' number
    • at the login challenge, type your 'u' number and ANU password
  • If you use a PC:
    • right-click on 'My Network Places'
    • choose 'Map Network Drive'
    • in the 'Folder' box, type: \\pebble.anu.edu.au\unnnnnnn where 'unnnnnnn' is your ANU 'u' number
    • choose 'Connect using a different user name'
    • in the dialog box that comes up, give your 'u' number and ANU password then click OK
    • Click 'Finish'
    • Drag the files you want to show downstairs into this network share

How do I connect to Pebble downstairs?

Log in with your u number and ANU password. The files you've uploaded will be in the 'My Documents' folder.

This doesn't work for me. Can you help?

  1. read the instructions above again and follow them carefully step by step.
  2. send me an email, at: Greg.Young@anu.edu.au
  3. ring 59666 (for Pebble problems)

Can I connect off-campus?

Yes. In Windows, an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) connection to Pebble can be invoked directly from the 'Run...' window or a DOS prompt by giving the command:

ftp pebble-ftp.anu.edu.au

You will be challenged for your ANU 'u' number and ANU password.

However, it's usually easier to use an FTP client program. There's many of these. Fetch is a popular Mac client. FTP Explorer is a commonly-used Windows client. It's available from:

http://www.ftpx.com/

Another well-regarded free FTP client is FTP Surfer. It allows files to be downloaded from the remote site into Word or a text editor, with changes saved back to the remote file. See:

http://www.whispertech.com/surfer/
