The Faculty’s Japan Centre now offers a Japanese program in the ANU Secondary College. The program began in 2008 and has recently celebrated the graduation of its first students. Many thanks to Barber-sensei and Honda-sensei, and our excellent students for making this first year such a success

What is the ANU Secondary College?
The | ANU Secondary College Program is a collaboration between the Australian National University (ANU) and the ACT Department of Education and Training (DET) to provide an enhanced learning experience for Year 11 and 12 students in the ACT.
What courses are offered by the Japanese ANU Secondary College?
Goals:
- ANU SC Japanese program aims to develop further competence in communication skills, the extended grammar, vocabulary, composition, reading of graded Japanese texts, and to introduce approximately 600 kanji by the end of the Second year.
On completion of this course students will be expected to demonstrate:
- Skills to maintain interpersonal communication, make practical arrangements and discuss topics of interest
- Skills to give and obtain information from spoken, written and visual texts, in a variety of modes
- Skills to respond creatively and/or critically to a variety of text types
- Understanding of the culture of the target language community appropriate to the level of study through the medium of Japanese
- Communication skills in increasingly complex linguistic and cultural contexts showing strong control over linguistic elements and an awareness of audience and purpose
- Independent and collaborative learning skills
When are the classes held?
Classes will be held on weekday afternoons at the ANU in two hour periods from 4:30pm to 6.30pm or 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
What do I end up with?
The results from the program will be able to be counted for the calculation of University Admission (UAI) scores with each course counting as a minor. You can count both your ANU course as well as your in college course in the same subject. The completed courses will also count towards further study at the ANU (worth of one semester course).
Am I eligible?
To be eligible you must:
- have a confirmed enrolment at an ACT College or school (Government or non-Government).
- be enrolled in a Japanese major at either continuing, intermediate or advanced level.
