Centre Activities

See what's really happening in the Japan Centre at the Japan Centre's blog.

The Japan Centre's aim is to equip students with the linguistic and cultural competence needed to function effectively in Japan, and the education to enable them to understand Japan in depth.

The Japan Centre degree programs are open to undergraduate and graduate students taking degrees in the Faculty of Asian Studies as well as to students enrolled in other Faculties at the Australian National University.

The Japanese language program run by the Centre offers a 48 unit major, spread over a minimum of 4 semesters (2 years). Students who wish to study Japanese beyond this level have a number of advanced courses to choose from, focusing on both written and spoken Japanese.

The Japan Centre also offers a major in Japanese Linguistics and courses in Japanese Literature, and a postgraduate program in Japanese Applied Linguistics in conjunction with the School of Language Studies (Linguistics) in the Faculty of Arts.

The Centre for Asian Societies and Histories in the Faculty teaches courses in Japanese history, religion and society. Courses in Japanese politics, economics and law are available in other Faculties.

Students are welcome to discuss their decisions on courses and degrees with the Centre's teachers.

For information about courses and enrolment procedures, please contact the Japan Centre Administrator via email FAS_Admin_Team@anu.edu.au, telephone + 61 2 6125 3165, or write to:
