How to use Audacity to record from various audio sources

This shows one or two small aspects of using audacity.

Recording sources

There are a number of different recording sources. The three that will be of interest to users are 'line in', 'mic', and 'stereo mix'.

  • if your computer is playing music or other audio you would like to record. For example a live internet radio broadcast. Use 'stereo mix'.
  • if your computer has an external device which is playing the audio. For example a tape player. Use 'line in'. In the above case this is 'rear blue in'
  • if your computer has a microphone which is recording the audio. Use 'mic'.

Select the appropriate source in the drop down box at the top of Audacity.

This shows how to record from a recording source in Audacity

  1. open Audacity
  2. select the appropriate recording source
  3. click the red recording button
    • this is a red circle in the main icon bar.
  4. play music from recording source
    • ie open the internet radio station
  5. when the station program of interest is over. stop the internet recording station and stop recording from Audacity.
  6. export current track as an mp3.
