Indian epics
Faculty of Asian Studies, The Australian National University
Thinking about subject choices for 2008?
The great classical epics of India, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, have been the pillars of the Indic civilisations for over two millennia, and are among the primary sources of religious, social and cultural inspiration. Within a rich theoretical framework of epic tradition, we will explore these great texts (in English translation) and the perennially relevant themes they embody: love and betrayal, sex and murder, duty and volition.
