Filmi Hindi is an intensive course aimed at intermediate and advanced learners and speakers of Hindi and Urdu, running weekends and evenings from mid to late January 2009 at ANU House Melbourne, 52 Collins Street, VIC 3000. Filmi Hindi carries ANU undergraduate and postgraduate credit.

Course description

This course provides students with the opportunity to explore spoken Hindi creatively through Bollywood film. It carries ANU credit for both undergraduates and postgraduates.

The aim of Filmi Hindi is to explore social aspects of Hindi language use and to attempt to answer one key question:

Why is language so important in the creation of credible Bollywood characters?

Students will have an opportunity to create convincing Bollywood dialogues and scenes by tailoring what their characters say to reflect important social and circumstantial information, such as the background of speakers and addressees, as well as conversational settings, topics, and functions.

To get from here to there, Filmi Hindi investigates five broad sociolinguistic themes:

  1. The many voices of the Khans – Shahrukh, Amir and Salman: Why don’t all Bollywood characters speak the same way, and why does no one character speak the same way, all of the time?
  2. Gandhigiri… Munnabhai style: What’s the standard of Standard Hindi?
  3. Jodhaa versus Akbar?: What makes Hindi, Hindi and Urdu, Urdu?
  4. Jab we met ...: How does Hinglish work?
  5. From Amitabh to Abhishek...: How has language use changed throughout the history of Hindi film?
