John Makeham BA (Hons) (ANU), MA (ANU), PhD (ANU) teaches Chinese language courses and courses in Chinese thought.
He is currently also serving as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Asian Studies.
He is happy to supervise students on a broad range of topics in modern and pre-modern Chinese intellectual history.
Research Interests
Chinese Philosophy; Chinese intellectual history; the history of the formation and development of modern academic disciplines in China; the relationship between 'Confucianism' and Chinese cultural identity; the historical and social roles of intellectual orthodoxies; relations between majority and minority cultures and societies, with particular reference to mainland China and Taiwan; the historian's and the philosopher's differing approaches to traditional scholarship in China; the relationship between commentarial traditions and cultural memory.
