Dr Hazel Lang [BA (Hons), Uni of Melb; PhD, ANU] joined the Faculty of Asian Studies in March 2004 as Coordinator of the new Bachelor of Security Analysis (Asia Pacific). Hazel's academic background is in Political Science and International Relations, having completed her PhD in the RSPAS at ANU in 1999. Her specialist areas include the politics of Burma/Myanmar, human security, global refugee issues. Hazel published her book, Fear and Sanctuary: Burmese Refugees in Thailand , with Cornell University's Southeast Asia Program Publications in 2002. She has also been commissioned to publish public documents, including with the UNHCR's Evaluation and Policy Unit in Geneva and the first research paper on Burma/Myanmar for the International Crisis Group. In 2002, Hazel constructed the Faculty's new course 'Burma: A Country in Change?', which followed the ANU's first intensive Burmese language course. Prior to returning to the ANU, Hazel worked with the Australian specialist refugee non-government organisation, AUSTCARE; and with the UNTAET peacekeeping mission in East Timor (November 2000-May 2002), in the National Planning and Development Agency in Dili and as a UN Field Officer in the Oecussi enclave.
