Digitising audio tapes
Faculty of Asian Studies, The Australian National University
ANU Language Labs no longer uses audio tapes. Instructors' and students' tape decks have been replaced by computers, with all audio files held digitally on a central server. If you wish to use the Lab you will have to digitise your audio tapes, put them on the server, then use the server software in your classes.
To digitise a tape use one of the Faculty's five tape decks attached to computers with appropriate software. Japan Centre users should see Dr Hayes; China and Korea Centre, Dr Edwards;
Southeast Asia Centre, Dr Thai Bao, or Dr Hassall. There is also a
shared-use machine in room e414.
To prepare a digital version of your tape file:
- Start\Programs\Accessories\Entertainment\Volume Control
- select Options\properties
- change "Mixer Device" to "Realtek HD Audio Input"
- make sure "Rear Pink In" is checked
- click ok
- under "Rear Pink In" check the "select" checkbox
- close Volume Control
- open Audacity
- rewind tape to start
- click the red circle to begin recording
- press Play on the tape
- come back when the end of the tape is reached (30 mins ?)
- click the orange square to stop recording when the tape end is reached
- select File\Export as wav
- save the file on:
- if you are on using a staff computer: the local drive
- if you are using the multimedia pc: \\facasianpc147\sound
- close the open .wav file in Audacity (this is the x next to Audio Track)
- when finished close Audacity
Files prepared by digitising audio tapes should be saved onto your local disk then transferred to the Lab server. Follow the Language Laboratory instructions.
To use the material on the server you should follow the instructions in the Virtuoso training course you attended last year. You will need to know where on the server your files are kept.
