The Faculty of Asian Studies, together with other areas of the Australian National University, contributes to the world's leading centre for research and teaching on Asia and gives students the chance to learn from some of the world’s top experts on Asian cultures and languages.

There are some 200 Asian specialists at the ANU, with a focus on East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific region. The programs are backed up by library resources unrivalled in Australia. More than 70% of Australia’s total Asian Studies resources are combined in the ANU Library and the National Library of Australia, also located in Canberra.

The Faculty of Asian Studies at the ANU offers a range of undergraduate programs and graduate programs that cover East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia.

All degrees in Asian Studies offer a unique integration of language and non-language cognitive majors. Students can select a language from an extensive list which includes Arabic, Chinese (including Cantonese and Classical Chinese), Hindi, Indonesian (including Javanese), Japanese, Korean, Sanskrit, Thai (including Lao), Urdu/Persian, and Vietnamese.

The fields of study cover Asian History, Asian Religions, Contemporary Asian Societies, Asian Politics & International Relations, and Security Studies.

Each year the Faculty of Asian Studies offers a number of prestigious scholarships, awards, and prizes, at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

If you have an interest in Asia, please feel free to contact the Faculty or approach Faculty staff members to consult on program structures and course offerings, and to discuss how an Asian Studies degree can contribute to your career development.
