Computing
Faculty of Asian Studies, The Australian National University
I've got a computer problem. Where can I get help?
- Start at the computer itself. Most programs have built-in help. Read it.
- Read the manual.
- Email me: Greg.Young@anu.edu.au, describing the problem as completely and as accurately as you can.
- Leave me a note: Greg Young, in room e425 of the Baldessin Precinct Building.
- Telephone me: Greg Young, on 612 55126, but please be aware that I may not be in to answer your call. I'm probably out attempting to fix someone else's computer problem.
It's urgent. How soon can you fix it?
- Everything's urgent and your job is only one of many.
Can you help me with a little problem I'm having with my home computer?
- No. The Faculty doesn't support its members' home computers.
I think my computer problems would go away if I had a newer, more powerful, computer. Can you give me one?
- Decisions about hardware and software spending go before the Faculty of Asian Studies Computing Committee. Please put your case for a new computer in writing to the Committee Chairman, Dr Peter Hendriks: Peter.Hendriks@anu.edu.au.
I need such-and-such a program. Will you install it for me?
- The Faculty has the resources to support only a limited number of programs. The program will not be installed unless you must have it to carry out your teaching or research. If you need special software, please write to the Chairman of the Faculty Computing Committee. (See the answer to the previous question.)
I've bought a peripheral device. Will you attach it to my computer and install the software for me?
- No. The Faculty supports only Faculty-supplied hardware.
I'm an undergraduate student. Can you help me?
- Computing help for undergraduates is managed by a separate ANU organisation. See: http://students.anu.edu.au
