TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF AWARD – 2008

1. GENERAL

1.1 Availability
In 2008 the Faculty of Asian Studies, ANU College of Asia & the Pacific may award up to ten (10) equivalent full-time Commonwealth supported places (‘the Award’) for Australian students (‘the scholar’) for programs offered by the ANU Faculty of Asian studies. The awards are highly competitive.

1.2 Award
The Faculty of Asian Studies, ANU College of Asia & the Pacific reserves the right to make no awards in a given year, to vary the number of awards or to make an award/s at other times in exceptional circumstances. The Faculty reserves the right to revise the awards from time to time.

1.3 Eligibility
1.3.1 Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens & Australian permanent residents are eligible to apply. (Please note that only Australian Citizens and permanent residents who hold a humanitarian visa will be able to defer the payment, other Commonwealth Supported Students must pay their fees up-front. 1.3.2 Students must be applying in 2008 for one of the programs offered by the ANU Faculty of Asian Studies which are limited to: Master of Asia-Pacific Studies and the Master of Arts (Asia-Pacific Studies)

1.3.3 Non award study is not eligible.

1.4 Selection
Selection of students for Commonwealth supported places will be based on past academic performance, work experience, Asia language ability, employer and referee reports. The selection committee will select students on the basis of superior past academic performance, evidence of progression in employment and the potential the student demonstrates for superior academic performance. Evidence of academic potential may be demonstrated by superior performance in the GMAT test in addition to past academic study. Evidence of need may also be considered by the selection committee.

1.5 Candidature
A scholar will be required to enrol in one of the programs offered by the ANU Faculty of Asian Studies and is limited to: Master of Asia-Pacific Studies and the Master of Arts (Asian Studies) only for courses within these programs offered and taught by the Faculty of Asian Studies, ANU College of Asia & the Pacific. If a scholar takes elective courses in academic units outside the Faculty of Asian Studies, ANU College of Asia & the Pacific these must be studied on a non-award, full fee basis.

Requests to vary program choice within the scholar’s first semester of study (before the relevant census date) will be considered by the Dean of the Faculty.

1.6 Deferral
Successful applicants are expected to take up their award offer in the semester for which it was offered. Applications to defer the award will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and should be made in writing to the Dean of the Faculty. Subject to approval, the award may be deferred for only one semester.

1.7 University Regulations
A scholar is subject to The Australian National University Act 1991 as amended, and to the Statutes, Rules, Regulations and Resolutions of the University.

1.8 Concurrent holding of other Awards/Awards
The award will not be tenable with any of the following: • an Australian Government award of equal or greater value, • any academic award or scholarship offered by ANU of equal or greater value, • sponsorship by any organisation of equal or greater value. If the scholar fails to notify the Faculty of their tenure of another award or scholarship the Dean of the Faculty of Asian Studies, ANU College of Asia & the Pacific may determine that the scholar will be transferred to a full fee place.

1.9 Publicity
It is anticipated that Award recipients may be requested to participate in publicity of the award scheme from time to time. A scholar may be contacted for an interview and photograph.

1.10 Taxation Implications
It is the scholar’s responsibility to determine the taxation implications of the award, if any, which apply to his/her individual circumstances.

2. TENURE

2.1 Commencement
The scholar will be eligible for the Commonwealth supported place on enrolment at ANU is one of the programs defined at 1.3.

2.2 Duration
The Commonwealth supported place is available for the prescribed duration of the program in which the scholar initially enrols. Should the scholar seek to change program, the continued availability of a Commonwealth supported place is not guaranteed.

2.3 Attendance
A scholar is expected to be in attendance at the University at the commencement of the teaching period and to remain in full-time or part-time enrolment during the University teaching periods or semesters. Absences from the University through illness or for any other reason must be approved by the Associate Dean of the Faculty.

2.4 Withdrawal From Program
If the scholar withdraws from their degree program the Commonwealth supported place is forfeited.

2.5 Academic Progress
The scholar is subject to the usual rules of the degree program for which they are enrolled. If a scholar fails two or more courses they will be asked to show cause why their enrolment should not be terminated.

3. VALUE

3.1 Award
Student contribution amounts for 2007 for new and continuing students by ANU assessed in accordance with the amount stipulated by the Government for Commonwealth supported students (pre-2005 formerly HECS). Current amounts for Commonwealth supported places are given at http://www.goingtouni.gov.au/ . Enrolment is restricted to courses within the Faculty of Asian Studies, ANU College of Asia & the Pacific. If a student wishes to take elective courses offered by academic units outside the College of Asia & the Pacific, these must be taken at the full fee rate.

3.2 Fees
The scholar is responsible for making payment (or deferring payment if eligible) of all his/her tuition fee liability by the prescribed dates, given in the University Calendar.

3.3 Other Costs
Scholars are responsible for the costs of books, study materials, accommodation, and all other costs of study.

3.4 Employment
The award does not carry any commitment by the University for future employment.

4 ACCOMMODATION

It is the scholar’s responsibility to obtain residential accommodation. Information on student accommodation and application forms is available from the University Accommodation Services. Information may be found on the Web at: accom.anu.edu.au
