Are my computer's files backed up?

It depends where they are. Files stored on your local machine (your C: drive, or local hard disk) are not backed up by the Faculty. If you save a file on your local hard disk it will be your responsibility to see that it is backed up. Files stored on the Faculty file server (your H: drive) are backed up every week or so.

How about Macintoshes?

The Faculty's Macintoshes are not part of the Faculty server network and are not systematically backed up.

How can I backup my files?

  • copy the files to floppy disks
  • copy the files to CDs
  • copy the files to a Flash drive
  • copy local files to your H: drive

Is my email backed up?

IMAP email, stored on the mail server, is probably safe. Mail files stored locally are vulnerable.

Which files should I back up?

Anything you wouldn't want to lose. You don't need to back up programs, though. Just data.

Who is responsible for backups?

You are. If you need help, email Greg, at Greg.Young@anu.edu.au
