Bonus Points for Foreign Language Study

The Bachelor of International Business (Asia) degree complements the existing offerings in the Faculties of Economics and Commerce, and Asian Studies. It utilises the strengths of both faculties in providing a focussed, three-year sequence of specialist studies in which the study of international business is complemented and enhanced through the study of a related language and culture.

The University has encouraged faculties to develop new programs of study that utilise ANU strengths in creating distinctive opportunities for students. This new degree is consistent with that aim.

International business is a relatively well-established area of study in North America and Europe.

Many universities in Australia offer an international business sequence within a broader business-type degree and some offer it in combination with a degree in Asian studies. Few, however, offer a specialist three-year named program in international business and fewer still offer a specialist program incorporating a strong sequence in language and cultural studies. Given its acknowledged academic strengths, ANU is well placed to offer a distinctive and academically robust program in international business, which addresses student demand and which is consistent with ANU strategic directions.

For comprehensive information about entry requirements for specific programs you are encouraged to seek specific guidance, by appointment, with the Sub-Dean of the Faculty.

Degree structure

The structure involves two main components drawn from the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, and the Faculty of Asian Studies:

1. Faculty of Economics and Commerce 30 units of foundation courses in commerce plus 30 units of specialist courses in international business.
2. Faculty of Asian Studies 36 units in an Asian language plus 12 units in Asian society plus 12 units selected from courses offered within the Faculty of Asian Studies.
3. There will be 4 courses (24 units) of ‘free’ electives that can be taken in any faculty (i.e. not limited to either FEC or FAS).

Degree Requirements

The Bachelor of International Business (Asian) requires completion of 144 units including:

1. 60 units from Schedule 1 of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce (please speak with the faculty about the detailed offering)
2. 60 units from the Faculty of Asian Studies comprising
  • 36 units in an Asian Language
  • ASIA1025 Individual and Society in Asia A
  • ASIA1030 Individual and Society in Asia B
  • 12 units of courses offered within the Faculty of Asian Studies ***
      • Students would be encouraged to take two further courses (12 units) in their chosen language, which would give them a language major.

Combined Degrees

Given the specialised nature of the program and its cross-faculty construction it is not expected that the Bachelor of International Business will be offered in combined degree program format.

Degree with Honours

The issue of an honours program is under consideration taking into account among other things the relatively unique nature of the program. It is expected that there will an honours degree for the first cohort of students and that details of this degree will be available soon.

Honours in Asian Studies pages provide comprehensive information about the Honours Program at the Faculty.
