Non-School leavers who have a qualification that meets admission requirements apply through UAC or VTAC on the basis of that qualification. Those who will be 21 on 1 March of the year they wish to enrol and who don't have an entry qualification recognised by the ANU should consider applying through one of the following schemes:
- University Preparation Scheme (UPS) or;
- ANU Special Adult Entry Scheme (SAES)
University Preparation Scheme
Prepare for University entrance: take Asian Studies courses as a part of your program
The Faculty of Asian Studies participates in the University Preparation Scheme (UPS) and offers Asian Studies courses to UPS students. UPS students can choose from the following Asian Studies courses:
- Individual and Society in Asia A (Semester 1)
- Individual and Society in Asia B (Semester 2*)
- Introduction to Religion A (Semester 1)
- Introduction to Religion B (Semester 2*)
- For students starting a UPS program mid-year it is possible to take Asian Studies courses offered in Semester 2 without the pre-requisite of the first semester course. For students in this group it is advisable that you contact the Faculty to discuss your program.
To obtain an entry qualification for the ANU using the UPS, you must pass two UPS courses AND you must pass the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Multiple Choice.

What Does It Cost?
In 2002 the fee to attend the University Preparation Scheme is $400 (no discounts).
- Students will have the option of enrolling in an additional essay writing workshop, critical thinking workshop and a (Basic Maths) STAT preparation course. The cost of participating in these courses is not included in the UPS fee.
Special Offer
For students taking Asian Studies courses as a part of the UPS the Faculty of Asian Studies will refund 10% of your UPS fees if you successfully complete the UPS program.
If you make a satisfactory start in an Asian Studies diploma or degree course the Faculty of Asian Studies will refund another 20% of your UPS fees.
Total Saving of 30% = $132.00 (based on 2001 2002 UPS fees)

Individual and Society in Asia A ASHI1002
First semester
Two lectures and one tutorial weekly
Lecturer: Dr Wells
Syllabus: This course introduces students to some of the central issues that Asian nations have been facing in modern times, by focusing on the relations between the individual and the socio-political order, and between tradition and change. Major themes include the interaction of indigenous and western concepts of the rights and responsibilities of the individual, ideas relating to family and gender, and the impact of globalisation on the social and working lives of individuals. The course examines the major religious and cultural traditions of Asia and aims to develop a comparative understanding of Asian cultures and societies.

Individual and Society in Asia B ASHI1003
Second semester
Two lectures and one tutorial weekly
Lecturers: Dr Wells and Dr Reynolds
Syllabus: This unit will continue discussion of the issues developed in First semester but will focus specifically on religion, colonialism and nationalism. Each of these three themes will be considered in their transcultural aspect and studied as instances of globalisation and localisation. Case histories from across the region South, Southeast, and East Asia will illustrate popular as well as elite perceptions of religion, colonialism and nationalism.

Introduction to Religion A (Judaism, Christianity & Islam) RELS1002
First semester
Two hours of lectures and one one-hour tutorial a week
Coordinator: Mr Barnes
Syllabus: Methods in the study of religion. The question of religious evolution. Historic religions. The three Semitic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) studied from the point of view of their historical relationships and their present situation in the world. Contemporary religious revivalism and fundamentalism. Women and religion.

Introduction to Religion B (South Asian and East Asian Religious Traditions) RELS1003
Second semester
Two hours of lectures and one one-hour tutorial a week
Lecturer: Dr Powers
Syllabus: Anthropological and philosophical approaches to religion. An introduction to Indian and Chinese religious traditions. A discussion of Eastern and Western views of religion from a philosophical perspective. Religion and ideology in the world today.
